STORY

Three weeks into the role, I was told one of S&P’s ExCo was visiting London. And I needed to book meetings for them…

Thankfully, I managed to book a few meetings off the bat.

Then, I pitched a meeting to the Chief Investment Officer of a major global investor.

A great excuse to start a new relationship.

I went in, all guns blazing, and pitched the meeting…

He declined.

He was too busy.

No time available on the diary right now.

I had to review my pitch. What was missing? What could I do to convince him to say yes?

So, I went back to him and suggested we record the meeting.

The idea being that we both distribute that recording to our respective teams and organisations.

That way, we spend 1 hour meeting, but hopefully hundreds of other people can listen and get value from the conversation. A much better use of the time.

Suddenly, his diary freed up!

And he accepted.

That was the very first podcast episode. And we grew it from there.

Hosting a podcast has opened doors I didn’t think possible and it continues to be one of my favourite – and most valuable – side projects.

FAVOURITE

One of my favourite episodes to date is Mohamed El-Erian. I used to book his flights when I was an assistant at PIMCO. Ten years later I was able to talk markets, economics and sports with him. A stand up guy.

A close second is Ray Dalio. Who I spoke to about investing.

And McDonalds.
